Are you a newly commission Notary and wondering what to do next? Then you’re in the right place!!!
First off, if you’re commissioned in a state that doesn’t require training prior to obtaining your Notary commission, I highly recommend taking a course or seeking mentorship before you start advertising your services. The National Notary Association (NNA) offers a great Notary essential course. You should also learn and stay up to date with your state laws, most states offer free online guides or manuals containing rules and regulations for your jurisdiction. Here’s an example of NJ’s Notary Public Manual https://www.state.nj.us/treasury/revenue/pdf/NotaryPublicManual.pdf.
Remember, the key to becoming a great Notary Signing Agent is being great Notary first.
Errors and Omission Insurance
Another important thing you want to make sure you have in place before notarizing your first document is Errors & Omission insurance (E&O). This is not to be confused with a surety bond that is required in serval states. E&O insurance, which is also known as professional liability insurance, helps protect you from lawsuits claiming you made an error while providing services as well as unintentional mistakes. It’s recommended to obtain at least $25,000 in E&O coverage. When working directly with title companies they may require a higher coverage limit. Below are some companies that offer E&O insurance:
- NNA
- The Hartford
- Hiscox
- BiBERK
- BizInsure -Compare several E&O policies at once
PS. Please ensure that the policy you purchase covers you both as a Notary as well as a Signing Agent.
